Synthetic biology, also known as engineering biology, is a field that applies engineering principles to the systematic design, construction, testing, and optimization of biological systems. Rather than simply modifying existing organisms, it creates entirely new systems by assembling and optimizing fundamental biological components to serve specific human needs. Key technologies like gene sequencing, DNA synthesis, and gene editing play a vital role in this process. As these technologies advance and become more affordable, the industrial applications of synthetic biology are expanding rapidly, and the integration of AI, computing, and engineering is driving innovation in the field, leading to breakthroughs across a growing number of industries today.

The livestock husbandry is a cornerstone of the global food system, playing a vital role in food security, agricultural development, and environmental sustainability. As a crucial segment of food production, the livestock husbandry has been developing effective strategies to enhance feed nutritional value, reduce environmental pollution, and improve animal productivity. Phytase is the most widely used feed enzyme that is enhancing phosphorus utilization, reducing phosphorus emission, and improves animal growth performance while reduces environmental pollution. This makes it a key factor in helping producers achieve sustainable livestock farming practices.
According to the United Nations, the global population will be 8 billion near the end of 2022 and will rise to 9.7 billion by 2050. This rapid growth demands an increase in the speed, efficiency and quantity of worldwide food production, all without unreasonable contributions to environmental concerns like climate change.
While there are many ways to accomplish this, one factor of particular interest is the addition of animal feed additives to the diets of poultry, pigs and other domestic animals. As these additives are rapidly adopted in the industry, it becomes increasingly important to study their impact on animal growth, gut health, environmental impact and more.
We will explore one such animal feed additive — protease in the diets of poultry in this article, reviewing recent research to clarify its utilization.
The urgency of transitioning to a carbon-neutral future cannot be overstated, as the consequences of climate change continue to escalate. Contextualizing this urgency requires a deep understanding of the interconnectedness between human activities, greenhouse gas emissions, and the health of our planet.
At the forefront is the undeniable evidence of global warming, manifested through rising temperatures, melting polar ice caps, and increasingly extreme weather events. The carbon footprint of human activities, primarily driven by burning fossil fuels for energy, industry, and transportation, is a major contributor to these climate shifts. The continued reliance on these unsustainable practices not only accelerates climate change but also perpetuates environmental degradation and exacerbates social inequalities.
Transitioning to a carbon-neutral future is imperative to mitigate these threats and safeguard the well-being of current and future generations. This transition involves embracing renewable energy sources, implementing energy-efficient technologies, rethinking consumption patterns, and fostering sustainable practices across all sectors of society.
